The Pantheon of Paris

The historical restoration of the Pantheon

At the top of the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève in the 5th arrondissement, the Pantheon rises to 82 meters. Built between 1764 and 1790 by the architect Soufflot, at the request of King Louis XV, this religious building dedicated to Sainte-Geneviève was immediately transformed into a temple dedicated to the Great Men during the Revolution (1789).

In the XVIIIth century, Soufflot reimagined architectural style, combining the height and the light of a Gothic cathedral with the structure of a Greek cross, with supporting columns similar to ancient temples. He freed the space from its massive foundations.

It is also the first to use the principle of the “reinforced stone”, connecting the blocks of stone to metal fittings. For the past fifteen years the Pantheon has shown deterioration due to lack of impermeability of its cover. Metal elements have rusted in stone and made it burst.

The company  LEFEVRE  was selected to perform this historical project, one of the largest in Europe. The project will focus on the stabilization of the dome and drum.

A gigantic scaffold (unsupported by the structure of the Pantheon) is now being installed. Micropiles 17 meters deep in the four corners of the building will be used to support the massive scaffold weighing 315 tons and standing 37 meters in height. In one corner a huge crane 96 meters high will be installed with the capacity to support 4 tons.

As the official photographer of this extraordinary project, might I suggest that you follow its progress on this website …

On May 2nd 2013, the giant 700-ton crane arrived at the the Pantheon to lift 4 structures shaped bracket 43 tons each and install them at the four corners down the drum. The structures then serve as a stool to receive a crane set on the structure at 96 meters high, the platform and the scaffolding. First lift at the North-Ouest corner of the Pantheon :

The structure is also leaded by the crew of Paris-Charpente :

Third lift, South-West side. Seen from the nacelle, it's very impressive to see the structure rise and rotate :

The fourth lift is cancelled because the weather is very bad, and too much windy. The fourth sructure is lifted in two times, because there is no enough room to join the structures on the ground. The last part is finally done on May 24, early in the morning :

October 2013 :  scaffolding is installed on the ground. It is used to prepare sapines. They are then mounted on the platform around the dome of the drum and thus form the scaffolding.

The first tarp of JR – the artist street art held in last March to facilitate the protection of the dome – is placed in May and June :

From outside scaffolding there has been a number of diseases that could not be detected before. Including consoles under the balcony of the lantern and the cornice. The oxidation of iron reinforcements can not be stopped, the lower brackets must be replaced on the entire thickness of the wall in order to ensure a good stability of the top parts.
The removal of the lantern and rests, reusing stones in good condition and replacing those broken, will allow sustainable restoration of this element, the most exposed of the monument.

February, 2015: because of its major degradation and its leakage, the old roof of the Pantheon was filed by the company roofers  LE BRAS FRÈRES . They install new recycled lead sheets that will cover the stone dome consolidated and restored by Lefèvre company. Lead tables were carved in the workshop and were shaped to size. Each table is unique: it must conform to the stone, modeled with the aid of a conventional bat. It is retained in the base on the welded lugs and secured by a brass bar. The leaves 4 mm thick cover an area of 1500 m2 and a total weight of 120 tons.
